Speed workouts seem to follow a certain script: You go into them feeling confident, die halfway through, and then when you come to, somehow have no recollection of the intervals you just endured and are left only with a sense of satisfaction and accomplished—albeit tired—legs.

Whether you run a 5-minute mile or a 40-minute 5K, speed workouts are based on your own abilities, which makes them difficult for any runner. While we’re in the thick of it, most of us are just counting down the time until it’s done, but, whether it’s because of the knowledge we’re getting faster or the feeling of leaving it all on the table, we keep coming back for more.
